Chile RUT validator and check digit calculator
Check the check digit of a Chilean RUT, including K, or calculate it, before you create the customer or vendor in SAP Business One.
Tool
This tool checks the check digit; it does not query the SII register. To confirm the taxpayer’s name and tax status, use the SII’s online services at sii.cl.
How do you validate a Chilean RUT?
A Chilean RUT ends in a check digit, which is a number from 0 to 9 or the letter K. To validate it, split off the digit, multiply the other digits from right to left by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 (then from 2 again), add them up, apply modulo 11 and compare. If it matches, the RUT is typed correctly; only the SII confirms the tax status.
Step by step: how to calculate the check digit
- Write the RUT without the check digit, without dots or dash.
- Multiply each digit by a weight, starting from the right: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and again 2, 3…
- Add up all the results.
- Take the remainder of dividing the sum by 11.
- Subtract that remainder from 11. If the result is 11, the digit is 0; if it is 10, the digit is K.
Example: RUT 12345678. From right to left: 8×2 + 7×3 + 6×4 + 5×5 + 4×6 + 3×7 + 2×2 + 1×3 = 138. 138 mod 11 = 6. 11 − 6 = 5, so the full RUT is 12.345.678-5.
RUT and RUN
The RUN identifies people and the RUT is the tax number. For a person they are the same number, with the same check digit. Companies and other entities have their own RUT, which is validated with the same rule.
Checking the digit vs. checking with the SII
This tool checks that the number is typed correctly. A RUT with the right digit may not be registered or may not belong to your customer. To confirm the company name and tax status, use the SII’s online services at sii.cl.
The RUT in SAP Business One
In SAP Business One, a customer’s or vendor’s RUT is stored in the business partner’s tax ID field (LicTradNum in the OCRD table). Checking it when you create the partner avoids duplicates and errors in reports. If you want this validation inside SAP B1, see our SAP Business One development service or SAP Business One by country.
Other LatAm validators
- Peru RUC validator (SUNAT)
- Mexico RFC and CURP validator
- Colombia NIT validator (DIAN check digit)
- Guatemala NIT validator (modulo 11, including K)
- Ecuador cédula and RUC validator
- El Salvador DUI and NIT validator

Paste the RUT
With or without dots and dash: 12.345.678-5, 123456785, or just the number to calculate the check digit.
We calculate the digit
The check digit (dígito verificador) is recalculated with modulo 11 and weights 2 to 7; a result of 10 is K.
Register it cleanly
Use the correct RUT on the business partner in SAP Business One, and confirm the tax status with the SII.
Questions about this tool
How do you validate a Chilean RUT?
Type the RUT with its check digit, with or without dots and dash. The tool splits off the digit, recalculates it with the modulo 11 method (weights 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7) and tells you whether it matches. If it does not, the RUT has a typo. The taxpayer’s tax status is looked up with the SII.
How is the RUT check digit calculated?
Multiply the RUT digits, from right to left, by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, starting again at 2 after 7. Add the results and compute 11 minus the remainder of dividing the sum by 11. If the result is 11, the digit is 0; if it is 10, the digit is K.
What does the K in a RUT mean?
K is the check digit when the calculation gives 10. Because the digit must be a single character, the letter K is used. A RUT that ends in K is just as valid as one that ends in a number.
What is the difference between RUT and RUN?
The RUN (Rol Único Nacional) is the personal identification number in Chile and the RUT (Rol Único Tributario) is the tax number. For a person they are the same number with the same check digit, so this tool works for both.
Does this tool confirm that the RUT exists with the SII?
No. It only checks that the check digit matches the calculation. The taxpayer’s name and tax status are looked up in the SII’s online services.
Does the validator store my data?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the RUT is not sent to Kodenova or to any server.
