Colombia NIT validator and DV calculator

Check the check digit of a Colombian NIT, or calculate it, before you create the customer or vendor in SAP Business One.

Tool

This tool checks the check digit; it does not query the RUT. To confirm the taxpayer’s name and status, use the DIAN’s online services at dian.gov.co.

How do you validate a Colombian NIT?

A Colombian NIT ends in a check digit (dígito de verificación, DV) that the DIAN calculates from the other digits. To validate it, split off the DV, multiply the digits from right to left by 3, 7, 13, 17, 19…, add them up, take the remainder modulo 11 and compare. If it matches, the NIT is typed correctly; only the DIAN confirms the RUT status.

Step by step: how to calculate the check digit

  1. Write the NIT without the DV, without dots or dash.
  2. Multiply each digit by a weight, starting from the right: 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67 and 71.
  3. Add up all the results.
  4. Take the remainder of dividing the sum by 11.
  5. If the remainder is 0 or 1, the DV is that number. If it is greater than 1, the DV is 11 minus the remainder.

Example (made up): NIT 900123456. From right to left: 6×3 + 5×7 + 4×13 + 3×17 + 2×19 + 1×23 + 0×29 + 0×37 + 9×41 = 586. 586 mod 11 = 3. 11 − 3 = 8, so the full NIT is 900.123.456-8.

NIT format

A NIT is usually written with thousands dots and a dash before the DV (900.123.456-8). Many systems want it without dots or dash (9001234568), or with the DV in a separate field. Store the same format in every record so that searches and reports match.

Checking the DV vs. checking the RUT with the DIAN

This tool checks that the number is typed correctly. A NIT with the right DV may not exist, may be cancelled, or may not belong to your customer. To confirm the company name and the RUT status, use the DIAN’s online services at dian.gov.co.

The NIT in SAP Business One

In SAP Business One, a customer’s or vendor’s NIT is stored in the business partner’s tax ID field (LicTradNum in the OCRD table). Checking it when you create the partner avoids duplicates and errors in reports. If you want this validation inside SAP B1, see our SAP Business One development service or SAP Business One by country.

How it works

Three steps, no signup

1

Paste the NIT

With or without dots and dash: 900.123.456-8, 9001234568, or just the number to calculate the DV.

2

We calculate the DV

The check digit (dígito de verificación) is recalculated with the DIAN weights (3, 7, 13, 17…) and modulo 11.

3

Register it cleanly

Use the correct NIT and DV on the business partner in SAP Business One, and confirm the RUT with the DIAN.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

How do you validate a Colombian NIT?

Type the NIT with its check digit (DV), with or without dots and dash. The tool splits off the DV, recalculates it with the DIAN weights and modulo 11, and tells you whether it matches. If it does not, the NIT has a typo. To know whether the RUT is active, check with the DIAN.

How is the NIT check digit calculated?

Multiply the NIT digits, from right to left, by 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67 and 71. Add the results and take the remainder of dividing by 11. If the remainder is 0 or 1, that is the DV; if it is higher, the DV is 11 minus the remainder.

What is the DV of a NIT?

The DV (dígito de verificación) is the last digit, after the dash. It is calculated from the other digits and catches typing errors: if one digit of the NIT changes, the calculated DV no longer matches.

Can I calculate the DV if I only have the number?

Yes. Choose “Calculate DV (number without DV)” and type the NIT without its last digit. The tool shows the DV and the full NIT in the 900.123.456-8 format.

Does this tool confirm that the NIT is active with the DIAN?

No. It only checks that the DV matches the calculation. The taxpayer’s name and RUT status are looked up in the DIAN’s online services.

Does an individual’s NIT have a DV?

Yes. For individuals the NIT usually matches the identity document number, and the DV is calculated with the same formula. So you can use this tool to get the DV of a cédula registered as a NIT.

Does the validator store my data?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the NIT is not sent to Kodenova or to any server.
